Christine Clay a famous actress owes her fame to her husband, he is always citicizing her for playing around with younger men, and mentions one Robert Tisdall in particular. Who happens to be staying not too far away from their home along the English coast. One night when Christine cannot hold her frustration in any longer she slaps her husband across the face, he remains calm except for the twitching in his eyes.
Christine’s body washes ashore as Tisdall happens to be walking by, next her her bosy is a belt and it is clear she had been strangled, as Tisdall runs for help he is spotted by two swimmers who assume he is the murdered fleeing from the scene.
As the story unveils it turns out that Tisdall is a struggling writer and owner of a coat similar to the one the belt belonged too, although it was stolen a few days previous. Also mentioned in Christine’s will, the police believe this gives him a perfect motive for wanting her dead.
Tisdall begins to wonder if anyone will believe his innocence, so escapes his trail through the crowded courthouse corridor. It is here that the story really begins.
